Autumn beginner cohort — starts 16 September 2026

Eight consecutive Wednesdays from 16 September to 4 November 2026 — 7.00 to 8.30pm — Studiomovement, London (UK)

Join our Autumn 2026 beginner cohort, a structured eight-week arc into Leung Sheung Wing Chun. One theme per week, from stance to your first partner exercise. Everyone starts together.

Wing Chun is a martial art, taught as a body-mind practice. We train martial techniques as a way of developing attention, structure, sensitivity, and timing — a practice that shows up in the rest of your week as a steadier way of standing, a different quality of listening, and a more mindful way of acting.

The cohort is designed for adults who are new to Wing Chun and want a structured way in, or for practitioners returning after a break.

What we cover across the eight weeks

  • Week 1 — Standing: the stance that holds everything else
  • Week 2 — Centre: finding it in your own body, then between two bodies
  • Week 3 — The straight line: your first move, from the elbow, along the centre
  • Week 4 — Little Idea: the first part of the first form
  • Week 5 — Stepping: how the ground stays connected while the shape moves
  • Week 6 — Meeting a hand: your first partner exercise
  • Week 7 — Staying with contact: structure that doesn't collapse when someone touches it
  • Week 8 — Handoff: everything together, and what comes next

Nothing is dropped once it's introduced. By week eight, the practice you began by standing quietly in week one will still be underneath everything else.

What you'll actually do in a session

Every ninety-minute session follows the same three ingredients:

  • Solo work to develop postural efficiency
  • Partner exercises to train structure, sensitivity, and timing
  • Immediate hands-on feedback to experiment with and take home

No uniforms. No belts. No sparring.

Who tends to resonate with this practice

Over the years, the practitioners who have found the most in this room often enjoy exploring somatic-movement practices.

We also see senior professionals looking for a Wednesday-night practice with depth rather than another gym; dancers, yoga and pilates teachers, and osteopaths exploring body mechanics from another angle; martial artists curious about the Leung Sheung line; and thoughtful beginners with no prior background at all, curious about Wing Chun for its own sake.

Wing Chun is suitable for adults of all genders, sizes, and athletic abilities. We are always open to beginners.

Lineage

We practice the Wing Chun of Yip Man (葉問) as taught by Leung Sheung (梁相) to Kenneth Chung (鐘萬年), and in turn to David Davila and Wesley Lim, in whose line the London student group trains.

Leung Sheung was the most senior student of Yip Man in Hong Kong, widely acknowledged for his skill and practical application. Kenneth Chung began his Wing Chun studies in Hong Kong in 1965 and is considered Leung Sheung's most outstanding student — a pioneer of Wing Chun in the United States, well known for his 'soft force', with a teaching that emphasises a relaxed yet rooted structure, precise position, and acute sensitivity.

Practicalities

  • When: Wednesdays 7.00 to 8.30pm, from 16 September to 4 November 2026
  • Where: Studiomovement (6th floor), 34 Chiswell St, London EC1Y 4SF
  • Cost: £80 for the full eight-week cohort, or £40/month rolling. First session always free.
  • How to reserve: message us on WhatsApp or by email — a one-line message is enough. We will reply personally within 24 hours and confirm your place with a calendar invite for all eight Wednesdays.

How do I get there?

Studiomovement is a clean, safe, and bright dance studio with a wooden floor and mirrors, at a walking distance from multiple stations: Moorgate (5 min), Barbican (7 min), Old Street (8 min), Liverpool Street (10 min), Farringdon (14 min).

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothing that allows free movement (eg. T-shirt), flat-soled shoes, and a bottle of water. Some practitioners have also found that bringing a notepad helps with their learning, especially when encountering new concepts.

What if I can't make the first Wednesday?

The cohort works best when you attend all eight sessions in sequence, because each week builds on the last. If you know in advance you'll miss one week, come anyway — we'll cover what you missed at the start of the next session. If you know you'll miss two or more, wait for the next cohort (spring 2027) rather than starting behind.

Do you offer regular classes in London?

Yes. From week nine (11 November) onwards, the Wednesday class returns to its regular mixed-level format, and cohort graduates continue attending. £40 a month, same time, same place.

How do I reserve a place?

Message us by email — a one-line message is enough. Places are limited to keep the cohort small enough for immediate hands-on feedback.
